Welcome to the fourth episode of Last Chance Kitchen. This time two chefs were sent packing from the main competition and LaurAlaska said it best as she walked into the kitchen, “Holy shit things just got real.”
We’ve been waiting for you
LaurAlaska of course knows who the chefs standing in front of her are and when Big Daddy reveals the already eliminated chefs she is surprised and feeling intimidated that someone like Jen has already been taken out. Frankly, I am surprised she recognized Jen because I sure didn’t. Daddy reveals that since two people have been sent to LCK two will be eliminated.
Tom talks about how both LaurAlaska and Rogelio had back to back challenge failures. He mentions to LaurAlaska that the omelet was so bad that no one wanted to eat it but had to. LaurAlaska explains that sometimes she has these days that she calls “Do Not Drive Days,” where she knows she shouldn’t operate heavy machinery because she is too scattered. Ooh honey, that sounds like a symptom of something much more serious. Rogelio was close to elimination in the Sudden Death Quickfire and was goner for his room temperature/cold elotes salad.
Make a dish with the pairings that do not belong together in 30 minutes
It’s a mad dash for baskets. Little Miss Witch grabs the basket of Bonita Flakes and Chocolate. Kwame gets the capers and bananas. Lee Anne, the pregnant lady get stuck with pickles and vanilla. LaurAlaska has strawberries and garlic. Rogelio sour candies with hot sauce. Even though Marcel’s elimination is sad, I am enjoying him as the Greek chorus. Screaming mole, mole, mole and telling Kwame, “Claudette wants your banana, are you going to let her touch the tip of the whole thing.” But he is still sort of pretentious though because when Melissa tells them that Rogelio is her San Francisco buddy he immediately wants to know where he cooks.
Lee Anne is making a chicken and incorporating the pickles/vanilla into a savory dish. Kwame is making a Nigerian stew. Little Miss Witch a raspberry mole sauce with venison. Rogelio is marinating tuna and made vinaigrette with the sour candies. LaurAlaska is making halibut home school style. I think she meant old school but the home school comment had me laughing so hard. Tom catches Rogelio at the fryer cooking the sour candies within an inch of their lives leaving Marcel intrigued.
Big Daddy is surprised that they were all able to incorporate the ingredients and did pretty well. Lee Anne’s chicken was perfectly cooked but a little less reduced juice because it was on the sweet side. He wants to know more Nigerian food from Kwame because this dish had a lot umami flavors and herbal notes. Claudette’s mole despite being made in 30 minutes had a lot of great flavors. Rogelio’s use of the gummies in the vinaigrette was great but frying and putting them on top not so much but the tuna was perfectly cooked. LaurAlaska’s nailed the halibut but lacked seasoning. But the winner is….
Little Miss Witch
He tells her that he is glad she is finally showing her flavors she was talking about all along, but where they in the main competition!?!?! However, the bottom two dishes are…
LaurAlaska says that she is disappointed but so happy to have just come because it’s been like fantasy camp for her to meet her culinary idols. Rogelio has no regrets because everything happens for a reason and he really just wanted to come on to make his family proud of him. Little Miss Witch has now won two in a row, she is feeling more confident and hopefully it lasts because the next LCK is going to throw the whole competition into a tailspin.
