So of course, this looked like a straight up season until last week when Bravo casually dropped the first episode of Last Kitchen and added four cheftestants to the lineup online.
However it is still brought to you by Hidden Valley, I hope they work the ranch keg in at some point this season
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS IN THIS RECAP. DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHO IS POTENTIALLY GOING TO THE BIG DANCE… AGAIN!
Don’t call it a comeback we’ve been here for years
They will have to battle each other first and then each freshly eliminated cheftestant that comes out of the game with many more twists and turns to come, one that apparently involves tarantula meat.
Kwame is the first to arrive with his silk pocket square, he is here to win LCK and get back in the big game. When Jen walks in and he is as shocked as I am and not just because of her hair. Honestly it took me a minute to place her, the platinum hair is a bit severe. She is here to win Top Chef once and for all. Lee Anne Wong walks out next calling herself an OG still a badass and here to show everyone she still has “IT.” Finally the last cheftestant comes out and it’s Marcel. I always forget that he was the runner up in his season. We are treated to his greatest hits and there were many of them.
Lee Anne is mostly concerned about Marcel and Jen because they made it the finale in their season. Big Daddy Tom asks each of them what they are up to. Marcel has two restaurants now as well as putting away the chemistry set and doing real food now. He asks Jen if she ever tires of missing the mark and falling short. He brings up Kwame’s closed restaurant. Kwame is opening a new restaurant focusing on Afro-Caribbean cuisine (mmmmm) closer to his roots and it is bigger. Lee Anne has a successful brunch restaurant, just turned 40, got engaged and is pregnant so you know just a few things going on this year already.
Big Daddy Tom tells them that only three of them will move on to the next challenge. The challenge will be to cook him something that reflects where they are now in their culinary careers, however they will only be able to use five ingredients and they have to agree on the same five ingredients from the table.
Is that peanut butter?
They will have 20 minutes to cook AND decide/agree. They agree and settle on lamb, cauliflower, olives, fennel and serrano peppers with only 15 minutes left to cook. You can tell Kwame hasn’t been out of the game that long because he is the only one familiar with where everything might be. When Jen is looking for salt he has to tell her it’s already on her station. Lee Anne is running all over the kitchen like it’s nothing, even though the kitchen is five times bigger then when she was last on. Marcel cannot figure out the fancy digital ovens and I am loving his elaborate updo/french twist that has has going on.
Big Daddy makes his rounds to each one stopping by Jen’s station the longest. She tells him she is making croquettes because the like her are crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. She admits that during All-Stars she had a bit of an attitude. We get a flashback to her and Tom going at it over the lack of seasoning on the egg on her dish. At one point Jen is running around looking for a sink to wash her hands and Marcel knocks over a glass bottle of spices. He puts it best when he says that they are all struggling a bit, looking like chicken littles and the sky is falling.
Marcel says that this is the wolf version of himself, when Big Daddy asks him why the change he says he has just evolved as an artist.
After taking a bit of Kwame’s he tells them that they have made this hard.
After a bit of a pause Big Daddy tells them exactly what he is looking for in these dishes.
- Seasoning, that everything is perfectly seasoned on the entire dish; and
- How well is everythign cooked.
He says that everything presented was perfectly cooked but his favorite was Lee Anne’s, second Marcel. The bottom two are Jen and Kwame’s. The extra fennel that Jen threw on her dish for crunch was not seasoned at all and had a bit too much of a bite. He is sending Kwame on and Jen is out.
This is just the beginning Trashies of a good season. I wonder when they are going to reveal the old timers to the new cast!
