This week, we have another guest judge! He looks very similar to last weeks, as he is in fact the same person – Arron Sanchez. Hmm. And also this week is called ‘A Gordon Ramsay Masterclass’ – so this was probably filmed back to back with last weeks ep. It’s not that bad though even for that, as we do get to see a lot of Gordy’s culinary skills, and Arron Sanchez is a pretty good choice for a guest judge.
Yep I’ve been hanging about here for a week in the closet.
At the top of the show we see Dani talking about how young she is, and how she wants to run her own restaurant. Brace yourself Dani, you’ve just put yourself in danger. Never tell the Masterchef gods your dreams as they tend to like crushing them and making you cry.
The first test is going to be slightly unusual for Masterchef, its not cooking as such but butchery. Gordy announces they are going to be killing and shelling a lobster. Eek, sums up my feelings on that. I think the last time they did this was waay back in season 2, and I believe they used the ‘stun then boil’ method. Gordy is demonstrating the ‘kill then boil’ one. This is the way Gordy thinks is the most humane, but if you’re the lobster its all ending up in the same place, the pot.
Diamond reveals she’s a vegetarian. Not this again. I suppose Diamond doesn’t dial up the full ‘omigawdIhavetocookmeat?’ shtick yet, but I lost my patience with vegetarians on this show last year and I’m in no mood to listen to another one tell me how hard this is.
Hey Mom, today I learned how to kill!
So this week its all about the Gordster. Tosi is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Lisa-Anne is confidant about her chances, and so is Diana (not Dani). Vegas Baby is doing well, and so is Schoolteacher.
There isn’t a lot to say until judging really. Shaun Vegas Baby is picked out first for doing an exceptional job. Andrea is picked out for the opposite reason. She hasn’t done well and is tearing up.
If I cry, can I get away with it?
She’s torn hers to bits, so isn’t safe. Schoolteacher is up and did a really good job, which is impressive for someone who lives too far away from the ocean to get much experience with lobsters, or crabs even.
Nathan has failed, although his looks like a decent effort it’s all torn in half and scraggy. He know he isn’t safe. Diamond on the other hand has done ok, despite her protestation that she’s a vegetarian. So now she has progressed to killing things, and thinks she can do anything.
Diana tries to talk her way onto the balcony, but fails. There’s bits of shell on the lobster and bits are missing. In the end, Diana, Andrea, Nathan, Lisa-Ann and Diana have to cook the next round. Everyone else is safe.
Alejandro deserves a mention as he does so well Gordy claims it was better than his effort. He gets an advantage in the next team challenge.
The next round is recreating Gordy’s Lobster Tortellini.
Rather you than me
Gordy demonstrates the dish, so they get a chance to see what steps are done in what order. Lisa-Anne is highlighted as someone who ought to do well because shes Italian – but it’s not a genetic trait its down to practice. Nathan is worried that as he’s never handled alcohol, he won’t be able to do the flambe part.
With varying degrees of confidence they set off. Gordy warns that anyone who messes up the pasta part will be in trouble, as if it gets too dry it’ll burst and then you have water-filled Tortellini.
Nathan gets to the flambe part and shows exactly what not to do with a pan on fire.
‘Kneel and blow’ isn’t always the right thing to do
This is not the worst fire based problem this week.
Lisa-Ann, in a move that some think is plain deliberate, throws the alochol onto her broth just as Gordy bends over to talk to her. He was about to ask why she hadn’t started her pasta yet, but ends up worrying if he has any eyebrows left.
Diana is confident again, but seeing how she always is that doesn’t tell us anything.
You distract Lisa-Ann, I’ll brain her with a pan
So Andrea and Eric seem to be chosen as the safe ones, the other three occupying the danger zone. The task is over, and judging begins.
First up is Eric.
Gordy has some quibbles on presentation, but overall its clear Eric is safe – even though he used the wrong size cutter so his are too small. Gordy applauds his attitude too so that’s a hint. Arron backs up Gordy’s judgement and Tosi looks on whining that she can help.
An iceberg of trouble
Diana is up next and she’s certain she’s wowed the judges. She doesn’t see that her Tortellini are all split, so any flavor will be ruined as the water gets in. The one good point is that her broth is ok. The bad point is that Gordy is now convinced she’s willing to send up crap food.
Andrea is up, and has aced it. Its not worth screenying as its mainly picture note perfect. The suspicion is that they left Andrea in the mix just to make sure at least one plate of food was done right.
Nathan’s look bad.
As it happens though, once Gordy gets past the bad presentation he is pleasantly surprised by the flavor. Even the broth, which looks greasy and sludgey, is described by Arron Sanchez as ‘dynamite’. Go Nathan! He handled the booze, nearly set himself on fire, but managed to pull it off.
Lisa-Ann is up last and knows her Tortellini are not good. Gordy says four of them burst, and although the filling was good, the broth is too salty. He stops and gets some passionate ranting from Lisa-Ann, who claims she isn’t done but there’s not a lot she can do to change anything now. She feels embarrassed.
The judging is gotten to in short order. Andrea, Nathan and Eric all did well so are safe. Diana and Lisa-Ann screwed it up and one is going home.
My money was on Diana to go home. I think that was the plan orginally, but Lisa-Ann’s escapades with the careless flambe and the salty broth meant it got changed to her. She is booted.
Its a bit of a surprise, but not an outrageous one. Next week, the ever classic cooking for the heroes, just so Gordy can say ‘these guys put their lives on the line and you’re giving them shit food’ and so on.
