Welcome back to Last Chance Kitchen I got behind on these because I have barely been eking out my regular recaps so we are going to go quickly through three episodes, dating back to back to the camping trip from hell and ending with episode after Restaurant Wars!
Episode 7: Leaves of Change
Tu and Brother enter the kitchen together because Last Chance Kitchen is starting from scratch.
Big Daddy welcomes them to Last Chance Kitchen, they each say their canned statements they prepared about getting back in the kitchen to win it all! In his talking head Tu makes a crack about Top Chef giving second chances just like our criminal system. Not for everyone Tu, not for everyone.
Tom says that this is the second round for getting back in the competition and from here out its old school rules.
Tom talks to them both about their shortcomings that got them eliminated. For Tu, it was his three way rabbit and Brother his German Spring roll. Brother says he shouldn’t have gone home because it was delicious. For this challenge, they will be working with the most plentiful ingredient in Colorado. Tu guesses snow, nope…
Trees, like the ones that actually grow in the ground
They will need to make one innovative dish that incorporates unconventional parts of the tree in 30 minutes.
Tu’s first idea is curry with the kefir lime leaves. Brother is going to make an avocado leaf ash. Brother and Tu stress how good of friends they are but they aren’t afraid to knock each other out of the competition. In addition to smoking leaves Brother is also smoking some chilies to finish his pork.
Who you think taught you to smoke trees
Tu finds his family’s fish sauce in the pantry but can’t find the plastic wrap he heeds to cook his chicken so he improvises with a sous vide bag. Brother also needs the plastic wrap and for some reason was able to find it and bring it out. He says his legs work that same as Tu’s and the plastic wrap was in the same spot it’s been all season. But even with 10 minutes left he doesn’t tell Tu he found the plastic wrap and Tu is struggling with his chicken.
Tom tells Tu that the plastic wrap is on Brother’s station and Brother just says my bad. Tu is pissed because that is a dirty way to play and he believes in integrity. There may have been an editing trick but it looked like Brother didn’t have it the whole time.
Big Daddy says both dishes were really good and clean, but what he is looking for is who used the product the best. Tu’s dish was good but he’s giving to…
Tu says being on Top Chef has been great but he isn’t down with the pettily shit and he only wants to associate with those that have integrity.
Episode 8: The Need for Speed
Tanya is all smiles as she enters the kitchen, I am guessing she was able to get a good night sleep not in twin bunk after the Olympics’ debacle.
Tom remarks about all the drama at the judges table. Tanya shows why she is the queen by dismissing the drama, saying she was trying to make it not dramatic. She felt their judgement was fair but didn’t want to hash out the issues with her teammate like that. I take it that she is not one to air her dirty laundry.
Tom reveals her competitor and it turns out these two have bonded over Brother’s Creole background and her mother being from Louisiana. There is a mutual respect and you can tell in their exchange.
Since Tanya was eliminated in a team challenge that she didn’t get to do the desired part she will get go for speed in this challenge. They negotiate on 10 minutes to make whatever they want.
Tanya is off to slow start because she can’t find the shrimp she wanted so she settles for salmon. Then a voice from the peanut gallery calls out to her…. TANYA…
I guess Tu is not over the mystery of the plastic wrap
Tanya asks how long are they usually given for these and Tom says 30 minutes.
But you wanted to go fast mama
Big Daddy felt both dishes were good. Overall, he liked Brother’s dish he got a lot done in a small amount of time. However, he could have used more acid and salt. On Tanya’s dish, he thought the fish was cooked nicely and liked the idea of the sauce but got some raw onion flavors that were not good. The slight edge goes to…
Tanya feels better to be leaving the competition this way without the drama.
Episode 9: The Last Dance
Claudette is back in Last Chance Kitchen with her power black lipstick on ready to light bitches on fire.
She does have the cutest chef coat though
BTW, she still maintains she ran a perfect service and was unfairly eliminated.
Tom asks her if she has any idea who she is up against and she says it doesn’t matter whoever it is she is going to smoke them. Ironically it is her sous chef and reigning LCK champ Brother Luck. Tom asks him if he is surprised and he sort of shrugs and says he wondered what happened.
Tom is such a drama king
Big Daddy comments on how she has already risen from the dead and taken Last Chance Kitchen. He wants to know if Brother is scared, he says no but in his talking head he says…
Tom asks Claudette if it would be safe to say that she is on her last leg… not unlike these ingredients.
Ok, NOW they are just fucking with her because last time some production assistants rolled out the table
Talk about seeing a ghost
They will have 30 minutes to create a dish using only the ingredients rotting on the table also, there are no proteins in the pantry.
Both Claudette and Brother share a past of being without. Claudette says when you are poor old vegetables are good vegetables and Brother relates often times they received boxes from the church that were random food donations.
Tanya is such an amazing woman. She is not only saying kind things about Claudette in the peanut gallery but also saying she could come back.
Claudette is going to make something with the plantains. She says that you want to eat plantains when they are black and because otherwise they are starchy and dry. Little Miss Witch, I am going to let you finish but plantains are DELICIOUS at all stages and it depends on the dish. Personally, if I am having them in a tostone or jibarito I don’t want them real sweet.
Claudette announces to the crew that the red team won 40G’s and Friar Bucket says his attorney will be contacting them for his cut. Brother’s eggplant is bitter so he decides to add miso to give it depth.
Tom is impressed with how good the dishes were without protein and subpar produce. Each had something he loved and wants to eat them again but….
Claudette says she is still queen of the kitchen, just queen of her own kitchen.
The most recent episode involved a Sudden Death Quickfire but Tom told Brother he only has three more battles until he is back in, so we will have to see how this all shakes out!
