Back already? Didn’t we just run legs 4 and 5, losing the BBallers and Overeaters, and witnessing a Doomed engagement? The newly betrothed leave at 4:34PM and wouldn’tcha know teams will not be on the same flight to the Czech Republic. They’ll arrive at 10AM with Yalies and Twins. Indy, BB and WellHung arrive an hour later. Their clue and a Double UTurn will be at the musical venue Rudolfinum.
Skiers have never not come in the top 3 (you go girls) and the Twins think they’re underestimated since they started off slow. Evan tells Chris this is when the claws come out (yeah, hers). No one on the 1st flight uses the UT.
Interestingly, and for the 1st time that I’ve seen, the Detour is simply This or That. No explanation of the task, just the location. I like this twist. Rudolfinum has an old-worldy, castle-like exterior but teams are only there to grab their clue, and the Skiers seem to be the only ones to keep their taxi. Yale has a minor spat and get on the subway.
Did you know the Czechs drinks more beer per capita than any country on earth? The This detour requires team to stack empty kegs two levels high while searching for the one full keg. Tap that
ass keg to pour a perfect mug, then use a dolly through the maze-like streets to the riverfront where a party boat waits for the suds. Skiers get to stacking…
That: Nicolaus Copernicus led the age of astronomy in Prague so for this task teams will have to listen to 2 astronomical lectures: one stating the earth is round, the other it’s flat. There will be details and mathematical figures to memorize in order to pass an oral exam.
I hope they weren’t “solid C students” in ocean rescue class
Doomed switches detours, knowing there are 3 teams an hour behind them. The Skiers are already on their 2nd layer of kegs and start pouring their beer, wondering what the perfect pour looks like, despite the nearby visual aid. They don’t have enough foam and the judge tells them 2 fingers. Which is kinda boo b/c let them figure it out. After fixing their beer they head to Fidelio, though they don’t know what/where it is. Yalies are at the brewery, and Evan is being a little snot, in an intellectually passive aggressive way.
The Twins listen to the lectures but get their 1st question wrong. There are 8 questions, well, 7 really as the last one is “is the earth round or flat?” which doesn’t count. A quick Google search shows me people still think it’s flat. Huh. The Twins go back in and listen again. They end up taking the exam many times, to get the questions they need answers to, and finish the task in 1st place since the Skiers are lost. Yalies also can’t find their beer drop-off spot and Henry can do nothing right today per MsYale.
The 2nd flight arrives and WellHung geek out at seeing Rudolfinum and a statue of a compuser they have played (Antonín Dvořák). But the statue proves bad luck as they are the only team UTurned (by BB). Indy got to the UT board 1st but decided not to use it (why?)
Doomed done with beer stacking/pouring and run to the Fidelio, possibly in the wrong direction. BB gets to the lecture hall as the Twins are leaving, which means the task took about an hour. Somehow they go into the wrong classroom, where real Czechs are learning and not in English. They flee to the other detour.
Skiers finally find the Fidelio and arrive at the Andelske Lazen Beer Spa before the Twins. There are older, portly gents sitting in tubs of beer, which is a local tradition (and an awesome one at that). One of the Twins says “there’s not ladies, that’s for sure”. heh
Not that ladies can’t bathe in barley and hops
Hey, that’s not Henry & Evan
But Henry & Evan are indeed heading to the spa after finding the boat. Domed fights as they practice for married life. Turns out they’ve been roaming the streets for 43 minutes (damn!)
Look at me, LOOK AT ME! We are not doomed, and I ain’t giving this ring back.
BB stacks kegs then Jess shoves her paw into her mug to scoop out the foam.
“Beer with a woman’s touch” she says
WellHung get an impressive amount of astronomy questions correct but one wrong is a fail.
Skiers arrive at the Roadblock: Hello, Hello, Hello? In Season 15 the original BBallers, the Globetrotters, took a penalty on this task since it was so hard (forcing our dear Phil to stay at the Pit Stop overnight!) Prague native Franz Kafka is responsible for this room full of ringing phones. One team member will have to figure out which eight are ringing, then decipher the message from the words given on the phone. The message will be a famous Kafka quote, but you can’t write it down. Jen does the task and goes down every row to try every phone, which is smart.
WellHung leave the school and head to the brewery, thanks to the UTurn. Daniel answers phones. Jen already has 6 words and I’m glad they don’t work together. Indy showing some cracks in their Broship running around with the keg on the dolly.
You can’t go to a Czech brewery and not try the beer
They should have had to drink the whole beer to get the clue. Doomed hears music and wonders if the place they’re looking for is a barge or boat. They finally find it and I say finally b/c Indy is right there, and they were on the 2nd flight!
Evan and Daniel work together at the phones – smart since they’re both just starting. Jen has her words but needs to figure out the exact order. WH pours perfect beer (they see the pic but don’t need it). Doomed, Indy and BB get to the beer spa so here’s another pic of dudes soaking their tushies in beer:
WH asks locals about the Fidelio. Jen 1st to solve the clue “the meaning of life is that it stops” and head to the Pit Stop Letenske Park. Evan and Daniel get their clue after a minor fumble of “wife” versus “life”. Also working together are Jess and Brittany, albeit reluctantly after Gnomegate.
Don’t touch my phone. Or my man.
Skiers check in, thanking the mat greeter in his native language. Twins and Yalies also make it to Phil and the spectacular view behind him.
Alex does the phone task and works with Jess and Brittany. Jess gives them the wrong word (“this” instead of “life”) and this earlier when she shared her words with Brittany. So when the 3 of them are at the judge, only Jess “tries something” and gets it correct. She then gives the others the correct word. Now, if she had thought of that at the beginning, and knew it would give her some extra time, then it was a smart (but kind of a dick) move. What happened is she only got like an extra minute on the other 2, who now know she tried to screw them. That was dumb and only increased the target on BB’s back after they used the UTurn. The 3 teams look for taxis to the Pit Stop. In their taxi BB drives by a running Team Indy. Both think the other team is lost. Doomed is almost last, despite being on 1st flight.
WellHung gets the beer spa clue, obvs in last. Trevor gets to answering phones. He guesses some of the words and WH jump on the subway.
Indy checks in as does Doomed, marking an end to their 1st day of engagement. BB overshot it in the cab and get to Phil in what appear to be a very close race for last, though the position of the sun indicates otherwise (though not by much). Sadly, the violinists were done in by the UTurn and are Philiminated. They’re glad to go out due to a UT and not a poorly run leg.
1. Skiers (winning a trip to Perth, Australia)
So BB “threw the 1st punch” and used the UT. That’s what it’s for and I don’t blame them. I woner why Indy didn’t use it. Do you think Evan is getting a little bitchy? And are the Twins the dark horse team? Post your thoughts in the comments below and thanks for reading.
