MisRed starts by giving thanks to Flip for letting me ditch Revolution and hop on American Horror Story: Coven! I am grateful for the intellectual upgrade.
Also, I apologize for taking so long to get this recap up- I am- normally a “next day type,” but I’m not going to lie, there were cocktails involved.
I’ll start by saying I am a huge fan of this AHS- not only the previous seasons, but the whole idea of completely changing the characters and storylines from season to season, while keeping the same actors.- it’s brilliant. And the subject matter is creepy and weird and awesome and MisRed loves it.
Unfortunately, MisRed isn’t here to love it, she is here to mock it, so let’s get started.
The premise of this whole menagerie is modern-day witches mixed in with Witches from the past… set in New Orleans. Again genius. Ryan Murphy could have gone with Salem, but I think New Orleans is a better choice with voodoo and Emeril Lagasse and who knows… maybe there could be a Very Special Sookie Stackhouse crossover episode? It would appear to have Mother / Daughter themes as well, which MisRed loves because she doesn’t have a Mother… MisRed was created in a Super Lab by Grey Matter Technologies. Mother/Daughter relationships tend to be complex and dramatic- perfect material. And MisRed loves herself some witches: Endora and The Wicked Witch of the West are two of her heroes.
AHS:C is set in N.O.L.A., as I said, and more specifically at the Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies… Hogwarts:South, to you and me. And you KNOW there will be a Hogwarts joke somewhere in this thing. The characters shake out like this:
Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson) -The Dumbledore Role of Hogwarts: South, perhaps called Dumbledeaux, Headmistress of the School and a major disappointment to her Mother, Fiona.
Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange, as if you didn’t know that)- Ironic name. Cordelia’s mother, and The Supreme, meaning the most powerful witch of her time/ generation. BTW’s she’s an impeccable dresser and has a penchant for cocaine… so, if Charlie Sheen wore Dior.
She is disappointed in Cordelia because she has not attempted to realize her full potential as a Witch. Cordelia’s report cards always came home saying “Cordelia doesn’t APPLY herself… why can’t she be more like her sister, Patti?” Oh wait, those were MisRed’s Report Cards…
